Medical Procedure Preparation, Teddy Bear Clinic
On
April 27, 2008 at Milford Hospital, 200 children played doctor to their Teddies
(and monkeys, dolls and Spider Man characters). Donning surgical apparel, the
children practiced giving anesthesia to their patients and read stories,
authored by Loretta Jay, about different medical procedures. In addition to the
stories, a 3-D puzzle of a human torso was available for the kids to play with,
as was the game Operation.
Parasol's
station at The Teddy Bear Clinic was one of several at the event, hosted by the
Food and Latex Allergy Awareness Group (www.flaag.org).
The program was designed to prevent or alleviate children's anxieties related to
medical treatment.
While the children explored Parasol's station, their parents
and grandparents found information about children's readiness for medical
procedures as well as support with restricted diets.
